The Future Of Art In Virginia

The future of art in Virginia is uncertain.

I just heard on the morning news that Virginia lawmakers are considering an amendment that would stop funding for the Virginia Commission of the Arts from the state budget.  Apparently the two houses are split on this decision.

If this amendment passes it would have a significant impact on the area arts community.  Thanks to attartist paintingractions such as the Staunton Augusta Arts Center the Central Virginia area has become a popular destination for culturly minded tourists.  Thus investing in the arts is an investment in cultural tourism which is an investment in the local economy.

Having been a fine arts major in college, I have always had an interest in art in Virginia.  One of the joys of living in the Charlottesville community has been the vibrant local art scene.  I hope that the legislature will carefully consider this issue and decide to continue financial support of Virginia art.

State Budget Threatens Art if you would like to see this story in its entirety.

Speechless Sunday - A Fluvanna County Morning

Like many of us this winter I am getting very tired of looking out of my window in the morning and seeing snow.  This afternoon in the Charlottesville VA area we even had temperatures in the fifties and I spent the afternoon picking up tree limbs that had fallen during the various snowstorms.  However despite the warmth I still have a foot of snow in my yard.  Therefore I thought i would share an early morning picture without snow.  In my dreams I am waking up tomorrow morning and looking out the window to morning fog over green Fluvanna County fields.

Albemarle County VA Meets Their New Canine

Albemarle County VA got the opportunity this evening to meet Bink their new police Albemarle County police dogcanine.

At a press conference this evening the Charlottesville community was introduced to the new Albemarle County police dog.  Bink, handled by officer David Hooper, is a 4 year Belgian Malinois imported from Holland.  The canine and handler have completed their training and have been on the street for the past week.  This dog will be used as a dual purpose dog for both apprehension and drug detection.

The purchase of this canine was made possible by cooperation between the Charlottesville Albemarle Kennel Club and the Charlottesville community.  CAKC put up half of the funds necessary for the purchase and training of the dog and challenged the community to match their donation.  Charlottesville rose to the challenge and the remainder of the necessary money was quickly donated.

The Albemarle County Police Department's committment to its canine program is a benefit to the area.

Speechless Sunday Postponed Due To Snow

Due to the major snowstorm that hit Charlottesville VA last weekend my speechless Sunday post was postponed.  The snowstorm which brought 10-14 inches of snow and ice to the region was accompanied by widespread power outages with over 40,000 households in the Charlottesville area out of power.  I managed to keep my power through the worst of the storm on Friday and Saturday, but lost power for most of Sunday.  Some parts of the area are not predicted to get power back until Wednesday night.  Unfortunately we are forecast to get another 4-8 inches of the white stuff tomorrow.  However I've got to admit it is beautiful!

Waiting For Snowmageddon

Charlottesville Virginia prepares for snowmageddon.December snowfall

This winter Charlottesville VA seems to have been mysteriously moved into the northern tier of states.  We started out the winter with a record setting preChristmas snowfall of 24 inches.  Last weekend we received another foot and Tuesday added a couple more inches.

Now we are once more awaiting snowmageddon.  The weather predictions are unsure of exactly what format this new storm will assume, but one thing they all agree on is that it will be major.  One scenario has it starting at about 6 am tomorrow morning with mixed precipitation which could result in 1-2 inches of ice before changing over to snow and continuing throughout Saturday with an accumulation of 8 inches of snow on top of the ice.  Another model calls for 2 days of snow with accumulations of 20-30 inches of snow.  What?  This is Virginia where 6-8 inches of snow a winter is normal.

Without a snowflakel falling yet, the area is going crazy!  The governor has decalred a state of emergency.  Many businesses have already closed tomorrow including my real estate office.  In fact my office manager has had the fax machine routed to her computer so that she can email all incoming faxes to the particular agent and we will not have to leave our homes.  This evening there was no parking at the grocery store where I shop.  Cars were driving up and down waiting for a parking place to open up.  There was not a loaf of bread on the shelves.  Every register was open yet lines were all about ten people deep.

Even social media is getting into the act.  The Daily Progress newspaper on line has a twitter poll where we can vote on the hashtag for the snow event.

All the preparations are made at my house so bring on the snow!  If we keep power, I'll post an update tomorrow.

Speechless Sunday - Fluvanna County Woods in Winter

One of the advantages of living in the Charlottesville Virginia area is the fact that the countryside is beautiful year round.  Today I spent most of the day showing homes in Albemarle County, Fluvanna County and Buckingham County to some of my first-time homebuyer clients.  On my way home through Fluvanna County I spied this woodland scene that was beautiful in spite of, or perhaps because of, the rainy, misty afternoon.

Speechless Sunday - Virginia Cloudscape

Virginia landscapes are always beautiful.  The quality of light in winter adds a luminosity to an otherwise bleak season.  I think this is due to the angle of the sun and the fact that it is never directly overhead at this time of year, so that the light is alway at an angle.  This year I have been particularly taken by the winter skies and cloudscapes.

On Friday Night In Charlottesville Whole Foods Is The Place To Be

On Friday night in Charlottesville VA Whole Foods Market is the place to be.

Every Friday evening from 5:00-7:00 Whole Foods Market teams up with a local charity for a wine tasting.  For just a $5.00 donation to the charity you can sample 5 different wines at stations throughout the store.  At each of the stations a wine is paired with a food selection.  Each table is manned by both a Whole Foods employee and a member of the charity.  They are pleased to answer any questions about the menu, the wine or about the charity and possible volunteer opportunities.

Sunrise to Sunset Your Charlottesville Realtor Works For You

My day as a Charlottesville Virginia real estate agent often goes from sunrise to sunset.

Today as on most days I am up as the sun begins to rise.  I pad out to the kitchen, start the coffee maker and sit down at the computer in my pjs with my cup of coffee.  I check emails from late the night before and pull up the hot sheet.  This is the latest real estate information from our local board of Realtors.  My hot sheet shows all of the real estate activitiy for the past 24 hours in Charlottesville Virginia, Albemarle County and the surrounding counties of Fluvanna, Louisa, Greene, Nelson and Orange.  I look at the new listings, price changes, homes that are back on the market, contingent and pending contracts, sold properties and what they have sold for.  I am paying close attention to any homes that may suit one of my clients.  At the same time I am also paying attention to what is happening to homes that may compete with one of my sellers properties.

The picture below shows today's sunrise in my neighborhood.

Virginia sunrise

Next it was on to the office (after getting dressed of course) where I met clients before we went out to look at homes in Glenmore and Spring Creek.  Afterwards the rest of the afternoon was spent on floorduty at the office.  Finally it was time to close up, but as I reached my car another car drove up with people who wanted a subdivision packet.  So I unlocked the office, invited them in and gave them an info packet for Glenmore and spoke about some of the homes for sale.  When I finally ended up in my car headed home, the last of the light was leaving the sky.

The picture below shows the very last colors of the sunset as I headed home.

Virginia Sunset

If you are looking for a real estate agent to help you buy or sell a Charlottesville VA home, you will want to find a Realtor with the dedication to work for you from sunrise to sunset.
