Do you carry a map and tape measure with you when you go out to put a yard sign on a new listing? How about when you are putting up open house signs to draw the public to your open house? Well, in Albemarle County Realtors are having to do just that.
In their wisdom the Albemarle County board of supervisors has decided this week to enforce a law that governs how far from the center of a road you are allowed to put a sign. To further confuse the issue different roads have different set backs. These distances range from 40 feet to 160 feet. One of our agents had his sign removed from the front yard of his listing because it was too close to the road. The agent had measured 40 feet from the center of the road, but on that particular road the sign was supposed to be set back at least 60 feet.
As a result many Albemarle County homes for sale will not have signs that can easily be seen from the road. With the large number of homes on the market our poor sellers do not need any impediment to the public finding that their home is on the market. Rather than making it more difficult for a homeowner to sell their home the county should be suppportive. Afterall the county makes money off the sale of the property as well.
So instead of trying to place for sale signs in the best location to be seen by the public, Albemarle County Realtors will be seen pacing off the distance from the center of the road or peering at a map trying to figure out what the regulations are for that particular street.
What are the regulations in your area regarding real estate signs?
